Every year the Hyundai team rolls into the 2012 New York International Auto show with a big reveal. The Concept Genesis Sedan, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid and Equus have all made their debuts in the Big Apple. This year we will pull the wraps off an all-new Santa Fe in a world debut. This year’s show will also have a lot of debuts from our competitors and as an enthusiast I look forward to seeing the sheet metal live. They include:
- A production version of the Nissan Pathfinder
- All-new Nissan Altima
- Facelift of the Toyota Venza
- Facelift of the Buick Enclave
- New Acura RL
- New Mercedez-Benz CLC
- New Dodge SRT (formerly the Dodge Viper)
Before the show starts, I thought I would give you my take on some of the Hyundai products of the past, the new Santa Fe and some of the competitive models listed above.
Concept Genesis sedan – A huge announcement for Hyundai, we were going rear-wheel drive and for a product P.R. manager this was great news. The Concept Genesis sedan also teased the design direction of the frontend of the 2012 Azera. Check it out for yourself.
Genesis Coupe – This was one awesome debut. Never underestimate the power of the smoky burnout. Yours truly picked the music for this reveal. Thinking back on it, it was a high risk project, but the reward was well worth it. The video is worth watching. The red Coupe seen in the video became Rhys Millen’s drift car, but that is whole other blog post.
2013 Santa Fe – Santa Fe is our most famous crossover. The original was one of the first unibody crossovers on the road. I drove an original Santa Fe when I first joined Hyundai in 2005. You can expect the all-new 2013 model to break new ground just like the first generation did and just like the 2011 Sonata did.
Dodge SRT – I’m so glad to see the Viper is coming back even if they are changing the name. The original Viper was one of my favorite cars in high school. We hope to see a Dodge SRT in the Formula Drift series sometime soon.
Buick Enclave – Enclave in my opinion is the best Buick on the road today. When it debuted, the Buick Enclave was one of the first vehicles to set Buick in the right direction. I’m sure the refresh will make a good looking vehicle look even better.
So, that is my take on New York. I can’t wait to drive some of these new models!
